Reflections: The Steinbach Building
Artist Statement
The Steinbach Building in Downtown Asbury Park, New Jersey, is one of the iconic historic buildings of the state. I have memories associated with it that are some of my earliest recollections. Time and my imagination have now made them 'imagined recollections,' so I wanted to explore it individually to see if I could find any fragments of myself there. It seems that those distant pieces of me are gone except for my memories…none remained by which to connect my present self with my distant past. Still, making the pictures allowed me to further relate my experiences to the building and how it exists with the surrounding cityscape.
Originally, I photographed it as part of my "Reflections..." series but felt it deserved its own sub-series, so I could fully concentrate on the building and develop a separate narrative and personal understanding.
